A theory we strongly suspected – that Christmas lights positively affect our mood – has been confirmed by a research poll we commissioned surveying 2000 people from across the UK.

  • 73% of Brits believe decorative lights produce a positive mood while one-third think neighbors should put in more effort

The festive season brings with it all manner of traditions and rituals, from adorning the house in detangled fairy lights to dusting off the baubles, but how does all this pomp and ceremony really make us feel?

For more than three-quarters of us (76%), that festive magic and holiday excitement only begins once seasonal lights start illuminating our homes and our high streets.

In fact, by banishing those dark winter days, 73% of Brits feel that seeing decorative lights in the run up to Christmas affects their mood in a positive way. This may be because more than half surveyed (65%) associate the sparkle and splendor of lights with the wonder of childhood Christmases.

However, for some of the UK’s citizens, the Christmas period can bring out the competitive side with over a third of us (36%) thinking that our neighbors should put more effort into their holiday light displays. Despite our differences on decorations, nearly 80% of us (79%) enjoy a good Christmas stroll with 82% opting for a blast of fresh air in the woods or a romp across the countryside.
